Beginners guide on Cybersecurity

Simple ways to protect our devices and files from malicious attacks online.

Introduction

As part of the ongoing internship, a webinar was held where we were introduced to the world of cyber security and Internet Safety practices.

It was an eye-opening session for me as I got to learn about how to secure my files, accounts, devices and online files from the threats online which include virus attacks, malware, hackers and phishing attacks.

I will go ahead to highlight some of the information I learnt and would apply too in protecting my devices and files.

What is Cybersecurity?

Cyber security is the method of protecting computers, servers, mobile devices, electronic systems, networks, and data from malicious attacks.

It is a broad term for technologies, practices and processes used to safeguard online data from unauthorized access or misuse. Every day, people play a part in cybersecurity when they follow internet safety tips and cybersecurity best practices.

Internet Safety Practices to adopt

  • Use ads blockers

  • Enable two-factor authentication to prevent hackers from accessing your accounts and information.

  • When generating a new password, pay attention to strong password requirements. Also don’t share your passwords with other people. Make sure passwords and password hints are stored securely.

  • Keep Personal Information Private.

  • Be cautious of suspicious links and files

  • Be careful not to download files or applications from users you don't know or trust.

  • Don't log into public wifi.

  • Always verify a link before clicking to ensure it contains (s) in the HTTP link which means that the website contains a secure socket layer.

  • Use anti-virus software

  • Promptly install software updates, especially when they include important security upgrades.

Malware

Malware means malicious software. One of the most popular cyber threats, malware is software that a cybercriminal or hacker has created to disrupt or damage a legitimate user’s computer. Usually spread via an unsolicited email extension or legitimate-looking download. Examples are viruses, ransomware, Trojan viruses, adware and spyware.

  • Install anti-malware apps and software in your system to protect them from malware attacks.

Phishing

Phishing is a kind of cyber attack that entices users into clicking on a link that will compromise private data. It is when cybercriminals target victims with emails that appear to be from a legitimate company asking for sensitive information. Phishing attacks are often used to defraud people into handing over credit card data and other private information.

  • We should try to be very mindful about the links we click and open. Especially email links and messages.
